Gordon & MacPhail and Speymalt
Gordon & MacPhail is a family-owned whisky merchant and independent bottler founded in Elgin in 1895, owned by the Urquhart family, which also runs the Benromach and Cairn distilleries. Its Macallan-distilled whiskies are bottled under the Speymalt name, and each release is labelled with its own vintage and cask details.
The whisky
This cask was filled in 2004 and spent two decades in a first-fill sherry hogshead, a smaller cask that gives the spirit plenty of contact with sherry-seasoned oak. It was chosen for the Itinéraires series bottled for La Maison du Whisky and is presented at its natural strength of 58.9%.
Serving
Taste it neat first, then add water a few drops at a time; at this strength it opens up noticeably. A tulip-shaped glass helps with the dried-fruit and cocoa aromas, and it sits well with dark chocolate after dinner.

No. It is an independent bottling: the whisky was distilled at Macallan and selected, matured and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, who sell it under their Speymalt label.
Should I add water?
It is bottled at 58.9% ABV, so a few drops of still water usually soften the alcohol and bring out more of the fruit and spice. Add a little at a time.

NOSE
Fig, date and prune with cocoa, fine leather, toasted hazelnut and a hint of blond tobacco.
