Born for a coronation
On the morning of 2 June 1953, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey. As the new sovereign emerged from the Abbey, the Royal Horse Artillery in Hyde Park fired a 21-gun salute β the traditional ceremonial honour for a British monarch. On the same day, in Strathisla in Speyside, Chivas Brothers' then-owner Sam Bronfman of Seagram launched a new Scotch whisky deliberately designed to be the most luxurious in the world. Its name was a direct tribute: Royal Salute β and its age statement matched the salute, 21 Years Old. Royal Salute became the first Scotch whisky brand to set its minimum age at 21, and the first to put aged Scotch in coloured ceramic flagons β Wade Ceramics in Stoke-on-Trent producing iconic decanters in the ruby, sapphire and emerald hues of the British Crown Jewels.
Seventy years on, the founding philosophy is unchanged. Every Royal Salute expression is still aged a minimum of 21 years. The brand still marks significant occasions in the lives of the British Royal Family β the Diamond Tribute for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Royal Wedding Edition for the marriage of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. And the prestige tier, the 62 Gun Salute, takes its name from the highest ceremonial honour the British military can give: the 41-gun royal salute combined with a 21-gun courtesy salute to the City of London, fired from the Tower of London on the most significant royal occasions.
Why Royal Salute β the blend
Strathisla heart, Longmorn body
Like its sister brand Chivas Regal, Royal Salute is built around two great Speyside malt distilleries at its core. Strathisla β founded in 1786, the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands and the spiritual home of Chivas Brothers β provides depth, structure, and a distinctive floral-spice character. Longmorn β revered for its luxurious texture and creamy, dessert-like notes β adds caramel, stewed pear and vanilla. Together they form the foundation. But where Chivas Regal layers younger whiskies on top, Royal Salute reaches deeper into the warehouses: every malt and grain in a Royal Salute blend has been aged a minimum of 21 years, with the upper expressions drawing on whiskies aged 30, 38 and 62 years.
Sandy Hyslop's signature
Master Blender Sandy Hyslop oversees the Royal Salute blend, having succeeded Colin Scott in the role. Hyslop is also responsible for Chivas Regal β making him simultaneously the master of Chivas Brothers' two flagship blended brands. The continuity matters: Royal Salute has had only a handful of master blenders in its 70-year history, and each has built on a continuous understanding of how Chivas Brothers' Speyside malts age over decades. The 24 Cognac Cask Finish β finished in first-fill French oak ex-Cognac casks β is one of Hyslop's signature personal innovations within the range.
The Royal Salute house style β rich, velvety, ultra-aged
Across the range, Royal Salute is defined by what long ageing does to Speyside malt. The signature notes β dried fruit, honey, sweet spice, polished oak, dark chocolate and a long smooth finish β appear in different concentrations across the range. The 21 Signature Blend is the calling card: sweet pears, citrus fruits, autumn flowers, orange marmalade, hazelnut and a trace of smoke. The 24 Cognac Cask Finish adds dark cherries, marzipan, summer berry compote and rich caramel from the French oak. The 30 Key to the Kingdom and 38 Stone of Destiny build sandalwood, antique fruit and concentrated oak. The 62 Gun Salute reaches the most refined maturity β sweet orange, ripe plums, sherried sweetness, fine dark chocolate and warm cinnamon.
Royal Salute rewards slow drinking neat from a tulip glass with a few drops of water β these are not whiskies for cocktails, ice or mixers. They are designed for contemplation, occasion, gifting, and the kind of drinking moment that justifies a 21, 30 or 62 Year Old age statement. Stylistically, Royal Salute is the prestige extension of the Chivas Brothers house β softer, fruitier and more honeyed than the smoky Johnnie Walker tradition, but reaching into ages and prices that the Johnnie Walker range only matches at its very top tier.
The Royal Salute range
Royal Salute and the world of polo
For over two decades, Royal Salute has been the global partner of polo at the highest levels β sponsoring the most prestigious tournaments in the world: the Royal Salute Coronation Cup at Cowdray Park in England, the Royal Salute Polo Challenge at Sotogrande in Spain, the Greenwich Polo Club in Connecticut, the Miami leg in Wellington, and the Polo Estancia tradition in Argentina. The pairing is deliberate: polo's heritage as the sport of kings, its association with the British Royal Family, and its emphasis on craft, time and patience align directly with Royal Salute's founding philosophy. The Miami Polo Edition and Polo Estancia Edition are both special bottlings created to celebrate this global polo partnership.
Royal Salute vs Chivas Regal β sister brands, different tiers
Royal Salute and Chivas Regal share the same ownership (Chivas Brothers, Pernod Ricard), the same Master Blender (Sandy Hyslop), the same Speyside heart (Strathisla and Longmorn), and the same headquarters at the Strathisla distillery in Keith. The difference is positioning: Chivas Regal is the everyday-to-premium tier (12, 15, 18, 25 Year Old), while Royal Salute is the ultra-luxury prestige tier exclusively (21, 24, 30, 38, 62 Year Old). Where Chivas Regal aims for accessible elegance, Royal Salute aims for ceremonial occasion. Many serious blended Scotch drinkers eventually own bottles from both β Chivas for the everyday pour, Royal Salute for the gift, the celebration, the milestone.
Awards and global recognition
Royal Salute has been a fixture at the top of the world's prestige Scotch whisky awards for decades. The 21 Year Old Signature Blend has been recognised at the International Spirits Challenge across multiple decades. The 24 Year Old Cognac Cask Finish received critical acclaim at launch as one of the most distinctive cask-finished blended Scotch whiskies on the market. The 38 Stone of Destiny has been named Best Aged Blended Scotch at the World Whiskies Awards. The 62 Gun Salute is consistently among the highest-rated ultra-aged blended Scotch whiskies in the world. Beyond the awards, Royal Salute's defining achievement is one of brand identity: 70 years as the prestige Scotch of state occasions and Royal Family commemorations, and the enduring association with the 1953 coronation that gave the brand its name.
Royal Salute FAQ
What is Royal Salute?
Royal Salute is a prestige blended Scotch whisky brand created in 1953 by Chivas Brothers to commemorate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The name refers to the 21-gun royal salute traditionally fired in honour of British monarchs β and Royal Salute set itself apart from launch by becoming the first Scotch whisky brand whose entire range begins at a minimum of 21 years old. Every Royal Salute expression is matured for at least 21 years, with the upper range extending to 24, 30, 38 and 62 Year Old releases.
Why was Royal Salute created?
Royal Salute was launched on the day of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, 2 June 1953, by Chivas Brothers' then-owner Sam Bronfman of Seagram. It was created as the most luxurious Scotch whisky in the world at the time β a tribute to the new monarch combining a 21-year-old age statement (referencing the 21-gun salute) with iconic Wade ceramic flagons in the colours of the British Crown Jewels: ruby, sapphire and emerald. The brand has continued to mark significant Royal Family events ever since, including the Royal Wedding Edition for the marriage of HRH Prince Harry and the Diamond Tribute for Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
What does Royal Salute taste like?
Royal Salute's house style is rich, velvety and luxurious β defined by long ageing on Speyside malt at its heart. The signature notes are dried fruit, honey, sweet spice, polished oak, dark chocolate and a long, smooth finish. The 21 Signature Blend offers sweet pears, citrus fruits, autumn flowers, orange marmalade, hazelnut and a trace of smoke. Older expressions add layers of figs, spiced citrus, dark chocolate and antique wood. The 24 Cognac Cask Finish brings dark cherries, marzipan, summer berry compote and rich caramel. The 62 Gun Salute reaches the most concentrated maturity β sweet orange, dark plums, sherried sweetness, fine dark chocolate and warm cinnamon.
What's the difference between Royal Salute and Chivas Regal?
Royal Salute and Chivas Regal are sister brands β both produced by Chivas Brothers, both built around Strathisla single malt at the heart, and both currently overseen by Master Blender Sandy Hyslop. The fundamental difference is age and positioning: every Chivas Regal expression starts at 12 years (with the premium tier going up to 25), while every Royal Salute expression starts at 21 years (with the prestige tier going up to 62). Royal Salute is positioned as Chivas Brothers' ultra-luxury prestige brand β long-aged exclusively, presented in iconic ceramic flagons or crystal decanters, and designed for the most significant gifting occasions.
What is the Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute?
62 Gun Salute is Royal Salute's prestige tier β named after the 62-gun salute fired at the Tower of London on the most significant royal occasions (41 for the royal event plus 21 as a courtesy to the City of London). Crafted from over 50 precious malt and grain whiskies aged a minimum of 40 years, 62 Gun Salute is presented in a midnight blue Dartington Crystal decanter adorned with 24-carat gold and crowned with a cut crystal stopper. The expanded 62 Gun Salute range now includes the Original Reserve, the American Oak Reserve, and the Ultimate Honour Collection trilogy.
Why is Royal Salute associated with polo?
Royal Salute has been the official partner of polo at the highest levels for over two decades β sponsoring royal polo matches and tournaments at Sotogrande in Spain, Cowdray Park in England, Greenwich in Connecticut, and Miami's Wellington in Florida, among others. Polo's regal heritage, its association with British royalty, and its emphasis on craft and heritage align directly with Royal Salute's brand story. Special editions including the 21 Year Old Miami Polo Edition and the Polo Estancia Edition celebrate this partnership and the global polo tradition.
Who owns Royal Salute?
Royal Salute is owned by Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky business of Pernod Ricard β the global spirits group that acquired the Chivas Brothers operation in 2001. The brand has continuous oversight from Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, who is also responsible for Chivas Regal. Royal Salute is positioned as Chivas Brothers' ultra-luxury prestige brand alongside Chivas Regal, Ballantine's, Aberlour, Longmorn and parent company The Glenlivet β making it part of one of the largest Scotch whisky operations in the world.
Is Royal Salute a good gift?
Royal Salute is one of the most universally respected ultra-luxury Scotch whisky gifts in the world β explicitly designed since 1953 for ceremonial occasions and significant gifting. The 21 Signature Blend (in the iconic ruby, sapphire or emerald flagon) is the entry gift bottle; the 24 Cognac Cask Finish and 21 Diamond Tribute are the considered modern choices; the 30 Key to the Kingdom and 38 Stone of Destiny are reserved for major milestones; the 62 Gun Salute is for the most significant occasions imaginable.
