What's in the bottle — and how the styles differ.
What Makes Gin, Gin
Gin starts with a neutral spirit and is defined by one botanical above all: juniper. Around it, distillers layer coriander, citrus peel, angelica, orris root and dozens of others — each recipe a signature. The spirit is redistilled with these botanicals to draw out their aromatics, giving gin its bright, perfumed character.
From Still to Style
Most quality gin is redistilled in a copper pot still, where the neutral spirit is steeped or vapour-infused with botanicals — the copper smooths the spirit and helps shape its aromatics. From there the styles diverge: London Dry stays crisp and juniper-led with nothing added after distillation, contemporary gins push floral, citrus or spice forward, flavoured and pink gins add fruit, and navy strength turns up the intensity.
How to Drink Gin
The perfect serve
Fill a glass with ice, pour one part gin to three parts good tonic, and add a garnish that echoes the gin's botanicals.
For purists
Stir gin with a touch of dry vermouth until ice-cold; finish with a lemon twist or olive. Bracing and elegant.
Endlessly mixable
Gin anchors the Negroni, Bramble, Gimlet and more — from bitter and bold to bright and citrusy.
Perfect Serves
Match the tonic and garnish to your gin.
