Dewar's was founded by John Dewar in Perth in 1846 and became one of the first Scotch whiskies to be bottled (rather than sold by the barrel) — pioneering both branded whisky and the practice of double-ageing blended Scotch, marrying the whisky in casks after blending for additional smoothness. The Dewar's 12 Year Old is part of the Dewar's double-aged range — matured for a minimum of 12 years and then double-aged in oak casks after blending — producing a noticeably smoother, more complex, and more deeply flavoured result than non-double-aged blends.
