One week a year
The Balvenie is normally an unpeated distillery, but since 2002 it has set aside one week each year to distil peated malt. The idea is credited to former distillery manager Ian Millar after a visit to Islay.
The whisky
The Week of Peat was released in 2019 as the second bottling in The Balvenie Stories. The 14 year old spirit matured in American oak, and the result pairs gentle smoke with honey, vanilla and ripe fruit rather than the heavy medicinal style of Islay.
How to enjoy it
Taste it neat first, then add a little water, which brings out the fruit at 48.3% ABV. It works well with smoked cheese or grilled meats.
