BenRiach
BenRiach was founded in 1898 by John Duff on the old Riach farm in northern Speyside. Since the early 1970s it has also made peated spirit, unusual for the region. Owned by Brown-Forman since 2016, its whiskies are created by Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie.
The whisky
The Original Ten is matured for at least 10 years in bourbon barrels, sherry casks and virgin oak, and the three are then brought together. BenRiach describes it as a smooth, lightly sweet single malt with orchard fruit, honey and toasted oak, closing on almond and spiced vanilla. The colour is warm amber.
How to enjoy it
Sip it neat or with a few drops of water. It is an approachable introduction to Speyside, and suits roast pork, a mild hard cheese or an early evening dram.

How is The Original Ten different from The Twelve?
The Original Ten is the lighter and drier of the two, built on orchard fruit, honey and toasted oak at 43% ABV. The Twelve is richer and sweeter at 46%, with port and sherry casks bringing cherry, orange and mocha.
Is there smoke in The Original Ten?
Only a trace. BenRiach rates its smoke level as a trace rather than none, far lighter than The Smoky Ten, which is made from peated spirit.

NOSE
Bright and fruit-forward — ripe orchard fruit, vanilla, sweet honey, soft toasted oak, and a gentle floral lift — clean, layered, and unmistakably Speyside.
PALATE
Smooth and rounded — baked apple, pear, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, soft caramel, and a touch of toasted oak — well-balanced with the three-cask layering clearly present.
FINISH
Medium and warming — lingering vanilla, orchard fruit, gentle oak, and a soft sweet warmth fading evenly — polished and approachable.
