BenRiach
BenRiach was founded in 1898 by John Duff on the old Riach farm in northern Speyside. Since the early 1970s it has also made peated spirit, unusual for the region. Owned by Brown-Forman since 2016, its whiskies are created by Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie.
The whisky
The Smoky Twelve is matured for at least twelve years in bourbon barrels, sherry casks and Marsala wine casks, combining peated and unpeated spirit. BenRiach describes it as a marriage of fruit, malt, oak and rich layers of smoke, smooth and creamy with ripened fruit and oak spice. The colour is burnished gold.
How to enjoy it
Sip it neat or with a few drops of water. The cocoa and orange notes suit dark chocolate, smoked meats or a strong cheese.

TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Sweet earthy smoke and flamed orange peel lead with chocolate brownies fresh from the oven, raisins, walnuts, toasted marshmallow, toasted almond, and orange zest — darker, richer, and more complexly smoky than The Smoky Ten.
PALATE
Thick, creamy, and beautifully layered — dark chocolate, fruit peel, brown sugar, and smoked oak with honeycomb, apricot, toasted bread, cocoa, caramelised sugar, and the well-rounded Marsala wine sweetness wonderfully juxtaposed with woody smoke and a hint of clove.
FINISH
Long and wonderfully complex — cocoa and orange smoked finish with almond, peppercorn, hickory, candied orange, and baking spice fading into a beautifully sustained campfire warmth — one of the most impressive finishes in the BenRiach range.
