Benromach distillery

Benromach was founded in 1898 near Forres in Speyside. It closed in 1983, was bought by the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail in 1993 and reopened in 1998. A small team makes the spirit by hand, and most releases use lightly peated barley to recreate the gently smoky Speyside style of the past.

The whisky

The 10 Year Old is matured exclusively in first-fill sherry and bourbon casks, and all of its golden amber colour comes from the wood. Benromach describe green apple and pear, creamy dark honey and soft vanilla on the nose, with malted cereal, stewed fruit, warm toffee and a hint of black cherry on the palate.

How to enjoy it

Taste it neat first, then add a few drops of water to open up the fruit and cereal. It also has enough character to work in a highball or a simple stirred cocktail.

Frequently asked

Is Benromach 10 smoky?
It is lightly peated, using barley at around 10-12 PPM phenol according to Benromach. The smoke is soft and sits behind the fruit and honey, far gentler than a typical Islay malt.

How does it compare with the 15 Year Old?
Both are matured in first-fill sherry and bourbon casks and bottled at 43% ABV. The 15 Year Old is darker and richer, with toffee, forest fruits and dark chocolate, while the 10 Year Old is fresher and fruitier.
