Distilled in 2014 and bottled in 2024 after a full decade of maturation exclusively in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks — twenty casks in total, married and bottled without chill filtration or added colour at a full — Batch 3 is the third and most recent release in Benromach's small-batch Vintage Cask Strength series, each drawing from a single year's distillation to showcase exactly what Benromach's lightly peated Speyside spirit is capable of when given exceptional wood and unhurried time. The result is a whisky of considerably greater depth, weight, and complexity than the core range expressions — rich fruitcake aromas and stewed fruit from the sherry casks, vanilla and toasted oak from the bourbon barrels, and Benromach's signature delicate peat smoke weaving through every layer from nose to finish. Best enjoyed neat to begin, then with a few drops of water to unlock the full aromatic breadth.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Sweet vanilla and fruitcake lead with brown sugar, spicy ginger, cinnamon, milk chocolate, and oak — deeper notes of stewed plum, blood orange, caramel, liquorice, and a damp dunnage warehouse earthiness developing with air.
PALATE
Creamy and powerfully flavoured — stewed plum, Seville orange, and cracked black pepper with toasted oak, subtle liquorice, red fruit, cocoa, candied ginger, and a savoury depth of clove and oak spice — beautifully structured and deeply satisfying throughout.
FINISH
Long and full — lingering smoke, aniseed, dark chocolate, dried fruit, and wood spice fading with a warm caramel sweetness — an exceptional close that rewards patience and rewards water equally well.
