Benromach 21 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 70cl
The oldest permanent expression in Benromach's core range — and a deeply satisfying demonstration of what two decades in exclusively first-fill sherry and bourbon casks achieves with this distillery's characterful, lightly peated Speyside spirit. Double Gold award-winning, the 21 Year Old represents the fullest expression of Benromach's sherry-influenced style: where the 15 Year Old is rich and fruit-driven, the 21 takes that character deeper still — the sherry influence now more pronounced and nuanced, the smoke more elegantly integrated, and the whole more settled, mellow, and layered than anything in the range below it. The sherry-seasoned oak casks are sourced from the celebrated Sherry Triangle of Jerez in Spain, and their contribution — stewed plums, raspberry jam, Seville orange, and chocolate-covered raisins — is met by the bourbon barrels' charred oak warmth and the distillery's characteristic delicate peat in a whisky of genuine elegance and depth.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Deep and richly sherried — stewed plums, raspberry jam, juicy sultanas, and orange peel open first with vanilla, toasted brown sugar, milk chocolate, aromatic ginger spice, dried apricots, and a sweet background warmth of gentle peat smoke.
PALATE
Sweet and elegantly complex — stewed orchard fruit, chocolate-covered raisins, and Seville orange marmalade lead into set honey, praline, red berries, and gingerbread with cracked black pepper, Seville orange, baked apple, and a smouldering bonfire smoke threading through.
FINISH
Long and sherry-led — buttery toffee apples, charred oak, fruitcake, and soft smoke fading with grace — a beautifully sustained and deeply satisfying close that reflects every year of its maturation.
