Nikka Coffey Malt Japanese Whisky - 70cl
One of the most genuinely unusual and compelling whiskies produced anywhere in the world — the Nikka Coffey Malt is a whisky that breaks the most fundamental rule of malt whisky production and produces something extraordinary in the process. Introduced in 2014, it is made entirely from 100% malted barley — the grain of single malt whisky — but distilled not in the traditional copper pot stills that define the single malt category worldwide, but in Nikka's vintage Coffey continuous stills at Miyagikyo, originally imported by founder Masataka Taketsuru in the 1960s. The result is a whisky that occupies a genuinely unique position in the spirits world: it has the grain base of a single malt and the textural richness and silky mouthfeel that only a Coffey still can deliver — two things that have never been combined quite like this anywhere else.
Matured primarily in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 45% ABV, the Coffey Malt delivers a surprisingly rich, tropical, and deeply sweet character — banana bread, butterscotch, milk chocolate, and orchard fruit in abundance, with a creamy, coating mouthfeel that sets it apart from every conventional single malt in the Japanese or Scotch category. TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Rich and immediately inviting — oily butterscotch, vanilla, and warm banana bread lead with tropical fruit notes of papaya, peach, and ripe banana, layered with caramel, roasted almonds, and a subtle citrus zest.
PALATE
Smooth, creamy, and gloriously fruit-forward — butterscotch and honey open into baked apple, cinnamon, milk chocolate, and chocolate-covered cherries, with malted barley, light spice, and a silky, coating mouthfeel that is uniquely and unmistakably Coffey still in character.
FINISH
Medium-long and deeply satisfying — chocolate chip banana bread, a touch of creamy bitterness, and a lingering sweetness of tropical fruit that fades warmly and cleanly.
