The elegant, floral counterpart to the bold Yoichi malt — Miyagikyo Single Malt is the flagship expression from Nikka's second and more serene distillery, nestled in a lush forest valley west of Sendai where the Hirose and Nikkawa rivers meet. Where Yoichi is shaped by Hokkaido's rugged coastline and coal-fire distillation, Miyagikyo is everything its environment suggests: softer, more fragrant, and delicately fruited, distilled in tall steam-heated pot stills with distinctive bulging necks that maximise reflux and yield a lighter, more refined spirit. A blend of predominantly unpeated malt with a small portion of peated barley, matured across sherry, bourbon, and American oak casks, Miyagikyo Single Malt is the ideal introduction to Nikka's craft — and one of the most approachable and genuinely characterful Japanese single malts available today. TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Delicate and floral with concentrated iris, apple, pear, banana, and apricot — layered with honey, beeswax, vanilla, sandalwood, a whisper of gentle smoke, and soft liquorice.
PALATE
Firm and lively with malted barley at the core, coated in herbaceous and spiced notes of ginger, cinnamon, and dark chocolate — with dates, citrus, vanilla, and a subtle thread of sherry-cask dried fruit.
FINISH
Smooth and medium-long with charred oak, wine, warming spice, and a final soft smokiness — clean, graceful, and deeply satisfying.
