Frequently asked
What are direct coal-fired stills?
Traditional whisky production method using direct coal flame under the stills for heating. Delivers distinctive heavy, robust character that steam or gas heating cannot replicate. Extremely rare in modern whisky — Yoichi is one of few distilleries still using this method.
Why Hokkaido for whisky?
Taketsuru specifically chose Hokkaido for its climate similarity to Scotland — cool, coastal, and with peat resources. His years training in Scotland shaped this location choice.
Yoichi vs Islay?
Both are peated coastal single malts. Yoichi peat is gentler and more herbal. Islay peat is more maritime and iodine-forward. Yoichi delivers "Japanese peat" — familiar-yet-distinctive to Islay drinkers.

TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Smoke, sea brine, and nutmeg open first, followed by candied orange, pear, lemon zest, vanilla, fresh cut flowers, and a rich coastal salinity — bold, complex, and immediately captivating.
PALATE
Full-bodied and creamy with heathery smokiness, dried fruits, walnuts, dark chocolate, and clove — citrus peel, cedar, and oak threading through alongside a gentle earthy peat and a pleasant briny warmth from the sea breeze influence.
FINISH
Long, smooth, and deeply rewarding — fruit and herbal smoke give way to menthol, leather, eucalyptus, and a slowly fading brine — one of the most characterful finishes in Japanese single malt.
