Signatory Vintage Benrinnes Aged 15 Years ARTIST 10th Anniversary - 70cl

$757.00 SGD $303.00 SGD

Founded in 1826, the Benriness distillery was destroyed by a flood in 1829. After being rebuilt the same year just a few miles away, it was then ravaged by fire in 1896. Entirely rebuilt in 1956, in 1966 it tripled its production capacity, moving from two to six stills. Up until 2007, it was one of the few distilleries in Scotland to practice triple distillation. Flirting with peat on the finish, this version reveals Benrinnes in a slightly unusual light. Overflowing with naturalness and vitality, it favours acts over long speeches in order to achieve its goal of reproducing as best possible the “old style” character of an intensely malty palette of flavours and aromas delivered directly and without frills.

TASTING NOTES

Color: Topaz.

Nose: Firm, powerful. The very medicinal (mustard poultice, mustard) first nose creates a malty block of rare density. We find ourselves beating a path through the fields to fully understand the intensely fruity (Mirabelle plum, pear, lemon), honeyed (lime blossom, lavender) and floral (mimosa, iris) character. Allowed to breathe, sublime spicy (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg) and of course malty aromas propel the aromatic palette into balsamic (cedar, pine) lands radiant with freshness and beauty. Becoming considerably more smooth, with time it becomes increasingly creamy and vanilla. Superb.

Palate: Concentrated, rich. The attack cedes nothing to the powerful character of the nose. Incredibly rich notes of vanilla appear alongside exotic fruit (pineapple, banana), chilli (Espelette pepper) and empyreumatic flavours (crème brûlée, incense). On the mid-palate, coconut milk spreads across the taste buds, as spices (black pepper, ginger) create a very confident relay. At the end of the palate, barley grains shower the palate.

Finish: Long, svelte. Lovers of spicy Havana cigars will adore the start of the finish. It is medicinal (pommade, arnica) and also rustic (slightly damp soil) and almost peaty. Casually brushing off these tertiary notes, the end of the palate then gallops toward extremely fruity (apple, kaffir lime, pear) and liquorice registers. The retro-nasal olfaction wavers between vanilla, praline and iris butter. The empty glass returns to the earthy character of the finish, adding cinnamon, milky coffee and aromatic plants (verbena, camomile).
