A pioneer of cask finishing
The Balvenie is a family-owned Speyside distillery in Dufftown, run by William Grant & Sons. Its long-serving Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE is credited with pioneering the cask finishing technique, and DoubleWood, introduced in the early 1990s, is the expression that made that approach widely known.
The whisky
DoubleWood is matured first in American oak casks, which bring vanilla and gentle spice. It is then transferred into European oak sherry casks for a further period, which The Balvenie says is around nine months, adding fruity, honeyed depth.
How to enjoy it
Try it neat first, then with a splash of water or over ice. It is a versatile bottle for the home bar and works well alongside cheese, fruit cake or apple desserts.

Rich and aromatic — honey, vanilla, sherried fruit, ripe orchard fruit, gentle baking spice, and warm toasted oak — beautifully composed and unmistakably DoubleWood.
PALATE
Smooth and rounded — honeyed sherried fruit, vanilla cream, soft caramel, dried apricot, gentle nutmeg, and integrated oak — silky and harmoniously balanced.
FINISH
Long and warmly oaked — lingering sherried fruit, vanilla, honey, and a gentle peppery oak warmth fading slowly — refined and beautifully composed.
