A Collection of Curious Casks
This series showcases individual casks from The Balvenie's warehouses that have not been released before. Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie selected this Montilla cask, and the Montilla bottling was released in October 2025, initially for the German market.
The whisky
Montilla-Moriles in Andalusia, southern Spain, produces sweet wines similar in style to sherry. After 12 years in a European oak butt that held one of these wines, the whisky shows barley sugar and honey, candied sweetness, vanilla oak and dried apricot. Retailers list it as non-chill filtered with no added colour.
How to enjoy it
Taste it neat, then add a few drops of water at 47.3% ABV. Try it with dried apricots, almonds or a mild Spanish cheese.

Refined and layered — soft honey, dried apricot, toasted almond, gentle nutmeg, a touch of orange marmalade, and the warm Montilla cask influence with subtle dried-fruit sweetness and gentle Iberian spice character.
PALATE
Smooth and complex — concentrated honey, dried sultanas, soft toffee, toasted hazelnut, gentle cinnamon, warm vanilla, with the distinctive Montilla wine cask character delivering refined nutty depth and dried-fruit elegance.
FINISH
Long and refined — sustained honey, gentle dried fruit, soft warming spice, and a polished Speyside oak fade with lingering Montilla cask warmth.
