Released in batches
The Macallan began releasing Rare Cask in numbered batches in 2018, with several batches following in 2019. Batch No.1 was the first of the 2019 releases, and each batch is its own vatting of casks.
The whisky
Rare Cask is built around two of The Macallan's defining strengths: sherry-seasoned oak and natural colour. This batch was drawn from first-fill sherry-seasoned European and American oak, and the rich mahogany-red colour comes entirely from the wood.
How to serve it
At 43% it is best neat, perhaps with a drop of water, as an after-dinner dram alongside dark chocolate or dried fruit.
