From Aberdeen grocery shop to Royal Warrant
Chivas Regal does not begin in a distillery. It begins, in 1801, in a grocery shop on King Street in Aberdeen β opened by two brothers, James and John Chivas, who set out to supply the wealthy Scottish gentry with fine spirits, exotic teas, French wines, Spanish hams and luxury goods of all kinds. The brothers were merchants and tastemakers first; whisky was simply one of many things they sold. But by the 1840s, with single malt Scotch still strongly varied from cask to cask and bottle to bottle, the Chivas Brothers began producing their own blends β combining whisky from multiple distilleries to create something more consistent, smoother, and more luxurious than any single malt then available could offer.
In 1843, that work was rewarded in a way that would shape the brand's identity for the next two centuries. Queen Victoria β who had recently purchased Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire and was becoming a regular customer β appointed Chivas Brothers as official suppliers to the Royal Household. The Royal Warrant has remained continuous ever since: over 180 years of unbroken patronage by the British monarchy, the longest such relationship of any Scotch whisky brand. When the first international Chivas Regal blend launched in 1909, the word "Regal" was a direct reference to that royal connection.
Why Chivas β the heart of the blend
Strathisla β the Highlands' oldest distillery
Every Chivas Regal expression begins with Strathisla single malt at its heart. Founded in 1786 in the village of Keith, Speyside, Strathisla is the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands β older than nearly every name on the modern single malt market. Chivas Brothers acquired the distillery in 1950, and it has served as the operational and spiritual home of the Chivas business ever since. Strathisla single malt is soft, fruity and honeyed, with toffee, orchard fruit and a creamy texture β the foundation of the smooth, generous house style that defines Chivas Regal.
Five Master Blenders in a century
The role of Chivas Master Blender β the person responsible for selecting and marrying every component whisky into the finished blend β has had remarkable continuity. Only five Master Blenders have held the post in over a century of Chivas Regal production. The current Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop, succeeded Colin Scott (who held the role for over thirty years), and is responsible for both the core Chivas range and the more experimental expressions including the Mizunara Japanese oak finish. Few Scotch brands at any tier maintain this level of human continuity in their blending.
The Chivas house style β rich, smooth, generous
Across the range, Chivas Regal is built around the honeyed, fruity character of Strathisla single malt and balanced with whisky from Chivas Brothers' wider distillery network β including Longmorn, Glentauchers, and the celebrated Glenlivet, alongside Strathclyde single grain. The signature notes β honey, ripe orchard fruit, creamy vanilla, butterscotch, warm baking spice and a long, smooth finish β are softer and rounder than the leaner profile of many competitor blends, and have remained remarkably consistent across decades of production.
Younger expressions like the Chivas 12 are bright and approachable β the everyday Chivas. The 15 XV GOLD adds Cognac-cask finishing for a richer, more buttery profile. The 18 introduces dried fruit, dark chocolate, elegant floral notes and the brand's most refined balance. The Mizunara explores Japanese oak. The 25 reaches concentrated marzipan, chocolate-orange and luxurious oak. Stylistically, Chivas is the soft, rich, generous counterpart to drier, smokier blends like Johnnie Walker β and a natural gateway from blended Scotch into the world of Speyside single malt.
The Chivas Regal range
Chivas Regal vs Johnnie Walker β the two great Scotch blends
Chivas Regal and Johnnie Walker between them dominate the global blended Scotch market, but they sit at opposite ends of the stylistic spectrum. Johnnie Walker β built around Cardhu single malt and a heavier dose of smoky Islay and West Coast malts β is drier, bolder, with more pronounced peat smoke and oak influence. Chivas β built around honeyed, fruity Strathisla β is richer, smoother, more generous, with softer fruit-and-honey character and noticeably less smoke. The two represent the two great traditions of blended Scotch: Chivas, the elegant Speyside gentleman; Johnnie Walker, the bold smoky striding traveller. Most blended Scotch drinkers eventually own bottles from both.
Awards and global recognition
Chivas Regal has been a fixture at the top of the world's blended Scotch awards for decades. Chivas Regal 18 has been named Best Premium Blended Scotch at the World Whiskies Awards multiple times and has collected gold at the International Spirits Challenge consistently for over a decade. Chivas 25 placed at the top of mature blended categories upon its 2007 reintroduction and has retained that position. The Mizunara expression won double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in its launch year. Beyond the awards, Chivas's defining achievement is the longevity of the Royal Warrant β over 180 years of continuous patronage by the British monarchy, the longest such relationship of any Scotch whisky brand.
Chivas Regal FAQ
What is Chivas Regal?
Chivas Regal is a premium blended Scotch whisky produced by Chivas Brothers, headquartered at the historic Strathisla distillery in Speyside. The brand traces its roots to a grocery shop opened by James and John Chivas in Aberdeen in 1801, and became a whisky house in its own right after receiving the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1843. The Chivas Regal name first appeared in 1909, and Chivas has remained a continuous Royal Warrant holder for over 180 years β making it one of the most heritage-rich blended Scotch brands in the world.
Is Chivas Regal a single malt?
No β Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whisky, meaning it contains a mixture of single malt whiskies from multiple distilleries combined with grain whisky. The heart of every Chivas blend is Strathisla single malt β the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands, founded in 1786 and home to the Chivas Brothers operation. Chivas blends include malt from Strathisla, Longmorn, Glentauchers and other Chivas-owned distilleries, balanced with Strathclyde single grain.
What does Chivas Regal taste like?
Chivas Regal's house style is rich, smooth and generous β built on the honeyed, fruity character of Strathisla single malt at its heart. The signature notes are honey, ripe orchard fruit (apple, pear), creamy vanilla, butterscotch, hints of warm spice and a long, smooth finish. Younger expressions like the 12 are bright and approachable; the 18 introduces dried fruit, dark chocolate and elegant floral notes; the 25 reaches concentrated marzipan, chocolate-orange and luxurious oak; the Mizunara expression adds Japanese oak's signature sandalwood, ginger and floral incense to the Chivas base.
What is Strathisla and why does it matter to Chivas?
Strathisla is the spiritual home of Chivas Regal β a Speyside distillery in the village of Keith, founded in 1786 and the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Chivas Brothers acquired Strathisla in 1950, and the distillery has been the headquarters of the Chivas operation ever since. Strathisla single malt β soft, fruity, honeyed, with notes of toffee and orchard fruit β is the heart of every Chivas Regal blend, and it is the malt that defines the brand's signature style.
What is the Royal Warrant on Chivas Regal?
Chivas Brothers received its first Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1843 β appointing the Chivas Brothers shop in Aberdeen as suppliers of fine spirits and luxury goods to the Royal Household. Chivas has remained a continuous Royal Warrant holder ever since, supplying the British monarchy for over 180 years. The "Regal" in Chivas Regal is a direct reference to this royal connection β when the Chivas Regal blend launched globally in 1909, the name was chosen to emphasise the brand's royal heritage.
What is Chivas Regal Mizunara?
Chivas Regal Mizunara is a unique expression that finishes Chivas blend in casks made from Japanese Mizunara oak β the rare and notoriously difficult-to-work hardwood that defines high-end Japanese whisky. Master Blender Sandy Hyslop developed the expression as a tribute to Japan's whisky-drinking culture. Mizunara oak adds layers of sandalwood, soft spice, ginger and a floral incense character on top of the Chivas honey-and-fruit base. It is one of the most distinctive cask-finished blended Scotch whiskies in the world.
Who owns Chivas Regal?
Chivas Regal is owned by Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky business of Pernod Ricard β the global spirits group that acquired Chivas in 2001. The brand has had only five Master Blenders in over a century of production, with current Master Blender Sandy Hyslop continuing a tradition of remarkable continuity. Chivas Brothers also produces Royal Salute, Ballantine's, Aberlour, Longmorn and is the parent company of The Glenlivet, making it one of the largest Scotch whisky operations in the world.
Is Chivas Regal a good gift?
Yes β Chivas Regal is one of the most universally respected whisky gifts in blended Scotch. The 12 Year Old is the entry gift bottle; the 15 XV GOLD and Mizunara are the considered modern choices; the 18 is the standard premium gift; the 25 Year Old, 18 X LISA and Royal Salute 21 are reserved for the most significant occasions.
