1816 β John Johnston's Kildalton distillery on Lagavulin Bay
Lagavulin was founded in 1816 by John Johnston on the southern Kildalton coast of the Isle of Islay β making Lagavulin the youngest of the three Kildalton distilleries by one year (Laphroaig 1815 and Ardbeg 1815). The 1816 founding date predates the 1823 Excise Act (the foundational legislation of the modern licensed Scotch whisky industry) by 7 years, placing Lagavulin in the pre-Excise-Act heritage cluster. The name "Lagavulin" comes from the Gaelic "Lag a' Mhuilinn" meaning "the hollow by the mill" β a reference to the original mill site where Johnston constructed the distillery. Lagavulin sits directly on Lagavulin Bay, a small sheltered bay on the southern Islay coast, with the historic Dunyvaig Castle ruins (the medieval seat of the Lords of the Isles, the powerful Gaelic chieftains of Clan Donald who controlled the western Isles for centuries) immediately adjacent β making the Lagavulin location one of the most historically resonant in Scotch single malt.
Lagavulin has been operating continuously since 1816 β through the entire 19th century industrial revolution, both World Wars, the post-1980s Scotch industry downturn, and the modern global single malt boom. Ownership passed through several Islay merchant families in the 19th century before the distillery was acquired by White Horse Distillers β where Lagavulin served as the heart malt of the famous White Horse blended Scotch portfolio. Distillers Company Limited (DCL) acquired Lagavulin in 1925, beginning the long blending-house ownership era that continues to the present day under DCL's successor Diageo (through United Distillers and the 1997 Guinness/Grand Metropolitan merger). The launch of the Lagavulin 16 Year Old as one of the original Six Classic Malts in 1988 transformed the brand from a relatively obscure blending-component distillery into a global single malt icon β and Lagavulin has retained that iconic status throughout the modern single malt era.
Why Lagavulin β the connoisseur's Kildalton, the Six Classic Malts, and Dunyvaig Castle
The connoisseur's Kildalton balance
Lagavulin's signature house style is genuinely the most balanced and integrated of the three Kildalton heavily-peated Islays β heavy peat (approximately 35-40 ppm phenols, between Laphroaig's 40-45 ppm and the lighter benchmarks) combined with sherry-cask depth, creamy maritime integration, and the distinctive Lagavulin Bay coastal maturation environment. The flagship Lagavulin 16 Year Old has been the gateway heavily-peated Islay benchmark for collectors and connoisseurs since the modern single malt era began β distinguished from the more medicinal-iodine character of Laphroaig and the more assertively-peated character of Ardbeg by its remarkable balance and integration. The 16-year extended maturation gives Lagavulin a level of cask integration and depth that distinguishes it from typical Islay competition. The brand's marketing has earned the description "the connoisseur's Kildalton" β referring to Lagavulin's status as the gateway Kildalton for serious whisky drinkers entering the heavily-peated Islay category. This balance is the central reason Lagavulin 16 has been continuously celebrated since the 1988 Six Classic Malts launch.
One of the original Six Classic Malts
Lagavulin is one of the original Six Classic Malts β the curated portfolio of Scotch single malts launched by United Distillers (now Diageo) in 1988 to introduce new drinkers to the diversity of Scotch single malt by representing each traditional Scotch whisky-making region with a single iconic distillery. Lagavulin was selected to represent the Islay region β chosen specifically over other Islay distilleries (including Caol Ila, the much-larger Diageo Islay producer) for the Lagavulin 16's distinctive balance and integration. The Six Classic Malts series was a major marketing innovation that helped revive interest in Scotch single malts during the post-1980s Scotch industry downturn, and remains an influential framework for understanding Scotch regional diversity. The original Six Classic Malts were Lagavulin (Islay), Talisker (Islands β Isle of Skye), Cragganmore (Speyside), Glenkinchie (Lowlands), Dalwhinnie (Highlands), and Oban (West Highlands). For Singapore drinkers, The Liquid Collection currently stocks Lagavulin and Talisker from the original Six Classic Malts β with the wider four (Cragganmore, Glenkinchie, Dalwhinnie, Oban) representing major future Diageo cluster expansion potential.
The Lagavulin house style β heavy peat, sherry-cask balance, Lapsang Souchong tea
Across the range, Lagavulin is defined by its heavily peated, sherry-cask-balanced, deeply integrated southern Kildalton house style β built on the foundation of heavy peat (approximately 35-40 ppm phenols), sherry-cask maturation, and the Lagavulin Bay coastal maturation environment. The flagship Lagavulin 16 Year Old (43% ABV, aged minimum 16 years in oak) shows what one of the smokiest noses from Islay should be β described in The Liquid Collection's own product copy as "more like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong!" Big, very, very concentrated, with iodine, sweet spices, good mature sherry and creamy vanilla. The palate is very thick and rich β a massive mouthful of malt and sherry with good fruity sweetness, big powerful peat and oak. The finish is long and spicy with figs, dates, peat smoke and vanilla. The Lagavulin 10 Year Old (43% ABV, matured full term in first-fill American oak bourbon casks) takes a meaningfully different approach β using bourbon-only maturation to emphasise the brand's clean coastal-peat character without sherry-cask interference. Sea breeze runs throughout rock salt, ripe apple, burnt sugar and maritime peat smoke on the nose. Sweet and salty palate with a good kick of chilli pepper, followed by roasted almond and more smoke. Creamy, smoky, spicy finish. Compared to other Islay benchmarks: Laphroaig wears its medicinal-iodine Kildalton authenticity (40-45 ppm); Ardbeg wears its assertive heaviest-peat Kildalton positioning (55-65 ppm); Caol Ila wears its eastern-Islay elegant peated Diageo positioning (30-35 ppm); Bowmore wears its 1779 oldest-Islay heritage (25 ppm). Lagavulin wears its Kildalton balance, sherry-cask depth, and connoisseur's-gateway iconic positioning.
The Lagavulin range
Lagavulin and the Kildalton trio sub-cluster on TLC
With Lagavulin now stocked at TLC, the Kildalton trio sub-cluster is COMPLETE on the site β Lagavulin alongside its Kildalton neighbours Laphroaig (the medicinal Kildalton) and Ardbeg (the heaviest-peat Kildalton). The Kildalton trio represents one of the most genuinely distinctive regional sub-clusters in all of Scotch single malt β three working distilleries clustered within a few miles of each other on the southern Islay coast, all founded between 1815-1816, all heavily peated, sharing similar water sources, peat sources, and maritime maturation environments β but each producing distinctly different stylistic outcomes. The Liquid Collection is the only Singapore retailer with all three Kildalton brands stocked at this depth.

The three brands also represent three different multinational ownership groups (Diageo, Suntory Global Spirits, LVMH) β making the Kildalton trio one of the most diverse corporate-cluster sub-clusters in Scotch.
The Diageo Scotch portfolio expanded β Lagavulin completes the four
With Lagavulin now stocked at TLC, the Diageo Scotch single malt portfolio on TLC has expanded to four pages β making the Diageo cluster one of the deepest single-portfolio clusters on the site, alongside Caol Ila (Islay β eastern coast, the largest Islay producer), Talisker (Isle of Skye β "Made by the Sea"), and The Singleton (Speyside β multi-distillery premium brand). Diageo plc β the British multinational drinks company headquartered in London, formed in 1997 β owns one of the largest Scotch single malt portfolios in the world.

For collectors building a complete Diageo Scotch cluster on TLC, the four brands offer four clearly differentiated stylistic and regional approaches under the world's largest premium drinks group. Lagavulin anchors the heavy-peated balanced Kildalton dimension; Caol Ila anchors the lighter-elegant eastern-Islay dimension; Talisker anchors the Island maritime-peated Skye dimension; The Singleton anchors the unpeated Speyside dimension. The wider Diageo Scotch portfolio β also including Cardhu (Speyside), Cragganmore (Speyside, Six Classic Malts), Glenkinchie (Lowland, Six Classic Malts), Dalwhinnie (Highland, Six Classic Malts), Oban (West Highland, Six Classic Malts), Mortlach (Speyside), Clynelish (Northern Highland), Glen Ord (Northern Highland) and many others β represents the deepest Scotch portfolio of any single ownership group globally.
Dunyvaig Castle and the medieval heritage of Lagavulin Bay
One of the most distinctive aspects of Lagavulin's setting is the immediate adjacent presence of Dunyvaig Castle (Gaelic DΓΉn Naomhaig) β the medieval ruined castle on Lagavulin Bay that gives the distillery one of the most genuinely historic settings in all of Scotch single malt. Dunyvaig was the principal stronghold of the Lords of the Isles β the powerful Gaelic chieftains of Clan Donald (the MacDonalds) who controlled the western Isles, the Inner Hebrides, and parts of the western Scottish Highlands as a quasi-independent maritime kingdom from approximately 1336 to 1493 AD. The castle was built in the 12th-14th centuries on a rocky promontory directly on Lagavulin Bay, with the harbour serving as the naval base for the Lords of the Isles' fleet of birlinns (galleys) β the medieval longships that carried the MacDonald fighting men across the western Scottish seas.
When the Lordship of the Isles was forfeited to the Scottish Crown in 1493 by King James IV (ending the MacDonald-controlled western maritime kingdom), Dunyvaig remained an important Islay stronghold for the MacDonalds of Dunyvaig until being captured by Campbell of Cawdor in 1612 β part of the wider Campbell consolidation of Scottish western lands during the early Stuart era. The castle was ruined by 1660. The Dunyvaig Castle ruins immediately adjacent to Lagavulin Distillery give the brand one of the most genuinely historic distillery settings in all of Scotch single malt β connecting Lagavulin to over 800 years of Islay's medieval Norse-Gaelic heritage. For Singapore drinkers, owning a bottle of Lagavulin connects directly to the medieval maritime kingdom of the Lords of the Isles and the dramatic Hebridean Scottish heritage that defined the western Scottish seas for centuries.
Lagavulin and pop-culture cachet β Ron Swanson and Nick Offerman
One of the most distinctive aspects of Lagavulin's modern brand identity is the genuine pop-culture cachet the brand has gained through its association with Ron Swanson β the fictional character played by American actor and writer Nick Offerman on the long-running NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation (2009-2015). In the show, Ron Swanson is a Pawnee Parks Department director with an obsessive love of breakfast meats, woodworking, and Lagavulin Scotch whisky β with the character's preference for Lagavulin 16 Year Old becoming one of the show's running jokes and a defining element of his personality. The Ron Swanson character became a major popular-culture phenomenon during the show's seven-season run.
Beyond the show, Nick Offerman himself has become a genuine real-life Lagavulin enthusiast and has appeared in multiple Lagavulin marketing campaigns β including the celebrated "My Tales of Whisky" web series (Diageo's Lagavulin storytelling content), in which Offerman has narrated Lagavulin distillery and brand stories with his distinctive deep-voiced delivery. The Offerman/Lagavulin association has given the brand a level of pop-culture cachet that few traditional Scotch single malts can claim β making Lagavulin one of the most genuinely culturally-resonant heavily-peated Islay single malts available, particularly for whisky drinkers who came to the category via the Parks and Recreation cultural moment. For Singapore drinkers, the Lagavulin brand identity now combines the medieval Dunyvaig Castle heritage, the 1816 founding pre-Excise-Act credentials, the Six Classic Malts pedigree, and the genuinely contemporary pop-culture cachet β a combination unmatched by any other Scotch single malt.
Lagavulin and the Islay regional cluster on TLC
With Lagavulin now stocked at TLC, the Islay regional cluster has expanded to eight pages β extending TLC's lead as the deepest Islay single malt selection available from any Singapore retailer. The Islay cluster on TLC now includes Bowmore (the oldest licensed Islay distillery, 1779, moderate peat at 25 ppm, Suntory), Laphroaig (the medicinal Kildalton, 1815, heavy peat at 40-45 ppm, Suntory), Ardbeg (the heaviest-peat Kildalton, 1815, peat at 55-65 ppm, LVMH/Glenmorangie), Bruichladdich (the progressive three-brand-line Islay, 1881, with unpeated, heavily-peated, and super-heavily-peated lines, RΓ©my Cointreau, B Corp), Port Askaig (the independent-bottling Islay brand, Speciality Drinks Ltd / Sukhinder Singh), Kilchoman (the modern Islay farm distillery, 2005, Wills family-owned, 100% Islay range), Caol Ila (the largest Islay producer, 1846, eastern coast, Diageo, blending workhorse), and now Lagavulin (the connoisseur's Kildalton, 1816, southern coast, Diageo, Six Classic Malts, Lagavulin Bay with Dunyvaig Castle adjacent). The Islay cluster now spans Islay's full historical, regional, stylistic, and ownership landscape β and at 8 pages is the deepest regional cluster on TLC after Highland (13 pages).
Lagavulin FAQ
What is Lagavulin?
Lagavulin (pronounced "Lagga-VOO-lin") is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky distillery founded in 1816 by John Johnston on the southern Kildalton coast of the Isle of Islay β the third of the three Kildalton distilleries (Laphroaig founded 1815, Lagavulin founded 1816, Ardbeg founded 1815). The name comes from the Gaelic "Lag a' Mhuilinn" meaning "the hollow by the mill." Lagavulin sits directly on Lagavulin Bay with the historic Dunyvaig Castle ruins immediately adjacent β the medieval seat of the Lords of the Isles. Lagavulin is heavily peated (approximately 35-40 ppm phenols), with a more balanced and integrated character than the heavier-medicinal Laphroaig and the heavier-peated Ardbeg β making Lagavulin the "connoisseur's Kildalton." The flagship Lagavulin 16 Year Old is one of the original Six Classic Malts (1988). Owned by Diageo, sister to Talisker, Caol Ila and The Singleton.
What does Lagavulin taste like?
Lagavulin has one of the most genuinely balanced and integrated heavily-peated house styles in all of Scotch single malt β heavy peat (approximately 35-40 ppm phenols) combined with sherry-cask depth, maritime salinity, and the foundational Lagavulin Bay coastal maturation environment. The flagship Lagavulin 16 Year Old (43% ABV) has been described as "more like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong itself" β one of the smokiest noses from Islay, with iodine, sweet spices, mature sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning. The palate is very thick and rich β a massive mouthful of malt and sherry with good fruity sweetness, big powerful peat and oak. The finish is long and spicy with figs, dates, peat smoke and vanilla. The Lagavulin 10 Year Old (43% ABV, full-term first-fill American oak bourbon casks) perfectly balances sweet, salty and spicy notes with sea breeze, rock salt, ripe apple, burnt sugar and maritime peat smoke.
When was Lagavulin founded?
Lagavulin was founded in 1816 by John Johnston on the southern Kildalton coast of the Isle of Islay β making Lagavulin the youngest of the three Kildalton distilleries by one year (Laphroaig 1815 and Ardbeg 1815). The 1816 founding date predates the 1823 Excise Act by 7 years. Lagavulin has been operating continuously since 1816. Ownership passed through several Islay merchant families, then White Horse Distillers, then Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925, then United Distillers, then Diageo from 1997.

Lagavulin is made at the Lagavulin distillery on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay β the third of the three Kildalton distilleries clustered along Islay's southern shoreline (Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg are all within a few miles of each other). The distillery sits directly on Lagavulin Bay, a small sheltered bay with the historic Dunyvaig Castle ruins immediately adjacent. The Lagavulin Bay coastal location is foundational to the brand's identity. The distillery's water source is Solan Lochs.
What is the Kildalton trio?
The Kildalton trio is the three working Islay single malt distilleries clustered along Islay's southern coast β Laphroaig (founded 1815), Lagavulin (founded 1816) and Ardbeg (founded 1815) β taking their collective name from the Kildalton parish on Islay's south-east coast. The Kildalton trio is famous for producing the heaviest-peated Islay single malts (35-65 ppm phenols), with a distinctive maritime-coastal, iodine-driven, medicinal house style. Laphroaig is the most medicinal-iodine signature; Lagavulin is the most balanced and integrated; Ardbeg is the most assertively heavily peated and complex. The Liquid Collection stocks all three Kildalton distilleries.
Why is Lagavulin 16 Year Old so iconic?
The Lagavulin 16 Year Old is genuinely one of the most iconic Scotch single malts in the world. Several factors combine to give it this iconic position. The 16-year age statement was unusual at the time of its launch and gave Lagavulin a level of cask integration that distinguished it from typical Islay competition. The Lagavulin 16 was selected as one of the original Six Classic Malts when Diageo launched the curated regional series in 1988. The genuinely balanced integration of heavy peat with sherry-cask depth and maritime salinity gave Lagavulin 16 a unique "connoisseur's Kildalton" character. The brand has gained genuine pop-culture cachet through Nick Offerman's Ron Swanson character on Parks and Recreation. The combination of age statement, Six Classic Malts heritage, character distinction, and pop-culture cachet makes Lagavulin 16 genuinely iconic.

Laphroaig (founded 1815) is the most medicinal-iodine signature β heavy peat at 40-45 ppm, with the famous "TCP" hospital-bandage character, active floor maltings, and a Royal Warrant from King Charles III. Lagavulin (founded 1816) is the most balanced and integrated β heavy peat at 35-40 ppm, with the iconic 16 Year Old combining heavy peat with sherry-cask depth and creamy maritime balance β making it the "connoisseur's Kildalton." Ardbeg (founded 1815) is the most assertively heavily peated and complex β peat at 55-65 ppm, with the deepest, most complex peated profile and the cult-collector following defined by expressions like the iconic 10 Year Old, Uigeadail, and Corryvreckan.
