Frequently asked
Why is Lagavulin 16 so celebrated?
Considered by many the definitive premium Islay single malt. 16 years of maturation delivers extraordinary integration of peat character with dried fruit, honey, and refined oak. Achieves "balance" that heavily peated younger Islay whiskies struggle to reach. Featured in Ron Swanson's Parks and Recreation character narrative, contributing to broader cultural recognition.
Lagavulin 16 vs Laphroaig 10 vs Ardbeg 10?
The Islay Big 3 flagships at their respective classical tiers. Lagavulin 16 is the most integrated and mature (5 years older than the Ardbeg/Laphroaig 10s). Laphroaig 10 is the most medicinal. Ardbeg 10 is the most peated (55 ppm). Three distinctively different Islay archetypes.
Is Lagavulin 16 age-old collectible?
Older bottlings and special editions (Distillery Editions, Feis Ile, etc.) have strong collector interest. Standard 16YO retail bottles are primarily for drinking enjoyment rather than pure investment.

TASTING NOTES
NOSE
More like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature Sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning.
PALATE
Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and Sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.
FINISH
Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.
