Nikka Coffey Grain Japanese Whisky – 70cl
The whisky that reveals one of the most fascinating and least-explored corners of Japanese whisky production — the Nikka Coffey Grain is a pure single grain whisky distilled from a 95% corn and 5% barley mashbill in Nikka's legendary vintage Coffey continuous stills at Miyagikyo, originally imported from Scotland by founder Masataka Taketsuru in 1963. First released in 2012 as the flagship expression of Nikka's celebrated Coffey Still range, it is a whisky with no direct equivalent in the Japanese category — closer in grain composition to a bourbon than to a Scotch, yet producing a character that is entirely and unmistakably its own: sweet, creamy, and lusciously smooth, with a rounded elegance that only the Coffey still's particular form of continuous distillation can achieve.
Matured in re-filled, remade, and re-charred American oak casks that allow the sweet, mellow character of the Coffey distillate to express itself fully without being overwhelmed by new oak influence, and bottled at 45% ABV, the Coffey Grain is the essential backbone of Nikka's blended whiskies — including the celebrated Nikka From the Barrel — presented here in standalone form for the first time. Meets all criteria of Japanese whisky as defined by the Japan Spirits & Liqueur Makers Association.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Sweet and inviting — vanilla icing, caramel, and corn sweetness lead with chamomile, fresh hay, a touch of apple, and a light floral note — clean, soft, and gently bourbon-like in the most pleasing way.
PALATE
Smooth, creamy, and lusciously coating — caramel flan, melon, grapefruit, and thick corn syrup sweetness develop alongside vanilla, cinnamon, roasted grain, maple syrup, and a light spice that builds slowly and deliciously.
FINISH
Medium in length with sweet corn notes, vanilla, and a warming spice lingering cleanly — smooth, mellow, and quietly satisfying throughout.
ABV: 45% ABV
