NIKKA From the Barrel Gift Set – 3 bottles of 50cl
T
Forty years of one of the world's most iconic blended whiskies — and a gift set that does something no Nikka release has ever attempted before: it takes the celebrated From the Barrel apart, bottle by bottle, and invites you to understand exactly what makes it extraordinary. This extraordinary three-bottle 40th anniversary limited edition — available exclusively through La Maison du Whisky and selected retailers worldwide — contains the limited Extra Marriage expression alongside two standalone component bottlings that together constitute a rare and revelatory masterclass in the art and science of Japanese blending.
The Extra Marriage (50cl, 51.4% ABV) is the anniversary centrepiece — the standard From the Barrel formula extended to double the standard marriage period of six months at Nikka's Tochigi Aging Cellar, yielding a rounder, more deeply integrated, and longer-finishing expression of the iconic blend. The Malt Pieces of the Barrel (50cl, cask strength) presents the muscular malt backbone of the blend in complete isolation — the bold peat, smoke, herbs, fruit, and medicinal complexity contributed by Yoichi and Miyagikyo, amplified by a small addition of heavily peated Yoichi whisky aged in new American oak for depth and backbone. And the Grain Pieces of the Barrel (50cl, cask strength) reveals the softer, rounder, more elegant grain component that gives the blend its structure and accessibility — fresh vanilla, fruit, herbs and floral notes with a warm spicy backbone, hints of chilli, and the characteristic creaminess of Nikka's vintage Coffey stills, with corn and rye from Satsuma Tsukasa adding vibrancy throughout. Experienced separately, each bottle is fascinating. Tasted in sequence, they reveal the full genius of one of the great blending achievements in whisky history.
TASTING NOTES — 3 EXPRESSIONS
EXTRA MARRIAGE — "The Harmony"
Nose: Soft and mellow oak, rich chocolate, ripe fruit, vanilla sweetness, refreshing orange peel, and malt sweetness — rounder and more deeply harmonised than the standard expression.
Palate: Rich and full-bodied with milk chocolate, roasted nuts, caramelised apple, honey, baking spice, and fine oak tannins — powerful yet seamlessly integrated at 51.4% ABV.
Finish: Long, warming, and elegantly sustained — dark chocolate, dried fig, oak spice, and a gently woody bitterness fading slowly and deeply.
MALT PIECES OF THE BARREL — "The Muscle"
Nose: Beeswax, iris butter, roasted pineapple, and nutmeg — intense malt, herbs, fruit, and a beautifully structured Yoichi peatiness underpinning the whole.
Palate: Medicinal, smoky, and complex — ripe apricot, sweet vanilla, mellow peat, lemon zest, herbs, and spice revealing the full strength and character Yoichi and Miyagikyo bring to the blend.
Finish: Energetic and silky — barley sugar, candied ginger, and a long, satisfying smoke-tinged close.
GRAIN PIECES OF THE BARREL — "The Soul"
Nose: Fresh vanilla, banana, fruit, herbs, and flowers over a warm spicy backbone — soft, creamy, and elegantly rounded.
Palate: Sweet and smooth with bitter-sweet marmalade, vanilla cream, citrus, and a hint of chilli — the Coffey still's characteristic creaminess complemented by corn and rye vibrancy from Satsuma Tsukasa.
Finish: Clean, warm, and gently spiced — a quietly beautiful close that reveals exactly why grain whisky is the unsung hero of every great blend.
