Benromach 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 70cl
In 2020, the family distillery Benromach unveiled its brand new identity, a true return to its roots, highlighting the unique character of these whiskies in the purest original smoky Speyside style. The Benromach single malts are made using a manual method that relies on the expertise of master distillers and are exclusively aged in first-fill casks. Topped with a red capsule symbolizing the iconic chimney of the place and dressed with a new logo inspired by a sign formerly placed on the pagoda roof of the distillery, the Benromach bottles salute the history and authenticity of this distillery founded in 1898. A nose that must be savored for a long time as it perfectly illustrates the Benromach style, a palate that undulates between fruit and wood notes and continues to gain in indulgence, a finish with slightly peaty accents that respects an ancestral tradition in Speyside. This magnificent 15-year-old is aged exclusively in first-fill bourbon and sherry oloroso casks, made us say that time has passed so quickly that we didn’t even see it fly by. Attention, this is not melancholy, it is a journey through time that carries with it even more promising futures.
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Ample, firm. The assertive and straight style of Benromach is immediately apparent. With a simplicity that sounds like an obvious choice, this 15-year-old displays a splendid maturity. The sherry brings its share of citrus fruits, dried bananas as well as a certain salinity and dark chocolate. The bourbon casks add vanilla and spicy notes (pepper, nutmeg). The overall effect is very harmonious and “old-style” in appearance.
Palate: Complex yet inviting. Lighter than the nose suggested, its attack is particularly fruity (caramelized apples). Very quickly, the magic of wood takes effect with spices that ensure a frenzied pace. Black pepper, ginger, and nutmeg can be found. The finish is pastry-like (orange Pim’s, oatmeal dessert). Finish: Long, dynamic. A very slight trace of peat and smoke (ashes) borders on woody. Dried fruits (almond, date) confirm this evolution towards more aridity. It continues with notes of stone fruits (black cherry, prune). The retro-olfaction that oscillates between precious wood and malted barley also intermittently shows indulgence (vanilla ice cream).
Profile: Rich and complex.
