Benromach Contrasts: Triple Distilled 2011 Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 70cl
The most technically distinctive expression in the Benromach Contrasts range — and the one that most directly challenges the distillery's own established identity. All standard Benromach single malts are double distilled; the Triple Distilled passes through the wash still and then twice through the spirit still, a third distillation that strips away the heavier, oilier congeners that give Benromach its characteristic rich and weighty texture, producing a fundamentally lighter, more delicate, and more fruit-forward spirit. Distilled in 2011 and matured in exclusively first-fill bourbon barrels — chosen to complement rather than overwhelm the lighter distillate — the result retains Benromach's signature subtle peat smoke and signature Speyside character, but presents them in an entirely different register: cleaner, airier, and filled with the tropical fruit and creamy vanilla notes that the third distillation unlocks. A fascinating technical exploration and a genuinely lovely whisky in its own right. Non-chill filtered.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Light and delicately aromatic — melted butter, banana, pear skin, honeydew melon, and zesty citrus with whispers of petrichor and a subtle earthy smoke — considerably airier and more fragrant than the standard Benromach house style.
PALATE
Silky and fruity with ripe tropical notes of pineapple, banana, and coconut leading into green apple, stewed apples, peach, malt biscuit, vanilla, and a hint of white pepper — the characteristic Benromach smoke present but softer and less assertive than usual.
FINISH
Medium-bodied with citrus zest, brine, lingering oak, wet pebbles, and a clean ashy smoke fading gracefully — long, light, and elegant throughout.
