Benromach Contrasts: Kiln Dried Oak 2012 Single Malt Scotch Whisky β 70cl
The companion piece to the Air Dried Oak and the more assertive of the two β the Kiln Dried Oak is a fascinating study in how a single variable in cooperage can meaningfully shift the character of the finished whisky. Where the Air Dried Oak uses American virgin oak staves dried naturally outdoors for three years, the Kiln Dried Oak takes the same virgin American oak but accelerates the drying process in a kiln after just two years of natural air drying. That additional kiln-fired stage increases the interaction between spirit and wood, producing staves that impart a richer, more direct oak character β waxy, spicier, and with a bolder tannin grip β compared to the softer, more aromatic fruit-forward profile of its air-dried counterpart. Distilled in 2012 and matured in these virgin kiln-dried American oak casks, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV as part of Benromach's Contrasts series.

TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Quite waxy with aromas of waxy lemon peel, toffee apple, sweet hay, malt biscuit, Demerara sugar, caramel-glazed apple, and tropical fruits β richer and more directly oaky than the Air Dried, with a subtle Benromach smoke in the background.
PALATE
Waxy and creamy with tinned pineapple, lemon peel, toasted bread, lychee, menthol, ginger, black pepper, and nutmeg β spicier and more oak-forward than the Air Dried Oak, with the classic Benromach smoke more prominent and the peat carrying a slightly Bowmore-esque quality.
FINISH
Mid-long and somewhat dry β black pepper, oranges, a touch of oak, and a sweet smoky note fading cleanly β characterful, warming, and deeply satisfying.
