Caol Ila 12 Year Old is the celebrated flagship of the Caol Ila distillery on the Sound of Islay — the largest whisky distillery on Islay by volume. Matured for at least 12 years in American ex-bourbon casks. Bottled at 43% ABV.
Founded in 1846, Caol Ila ("Sound of Islay" in Gaelic) produces a relatively lighter, more delicate peated style than its Islay neighbours. Part of Diageo's Classic Malts portfolio. Long the workhorse spirit of many blends, Caol Ila's single malt expressions have become highly celebrated in their own right.
An accessible peated Islay malt — neat or with a drop of water.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE
Aromatic and warmly composed — peat smoke, sea salt, vanilla, gentle citrus, soft honey, and a touch of toasted oak — distinctive and beautifully composed.
PALATE
Smooth and warmly smoked — sweet smoke, vanilla cream, gentle citrus, sea salt, soft caramel, and integrated bourbon oak — silky and harmoniously balanced.
FINISH
Long and warmly smoked — lingering peat, sea salt, vanilla, gentle citrus, and a soft oak warmth fading slowly — distinctive and refined.
