If Nikka is the rebel of Japanese whisky, Suntory is the establishment. Founded by Shinjiro Torii in 1923 β the year he opened Yamazaki, Japan's very first whisky distillery β Suntory is the house that built the category. It is the senior name, the global ambassador, and the producer of the three most famous Japanese whiskies on Earth: Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Hibiki.
Torii's vision was deceptively simple: to make a whisky that suited the Japanese palate, not a copy of Scotch. He chose Yamazaki, in the misty Vermilion Valley outside Kyoto, for its convergence of three rivers and exceptional water. A century later, that single decision underpins one of the most respected drinks brands in the world β and a range that spans an $80 highball bottle to a 40-year-old single malt that costs more than most cars.
This guide walks through the entire Suntory range available at The Liquid Collection, organised the way you'll actually drink it: the everyday blends, the great single malts of Yamazaki and Hakushu, and the icon that is Hibiki. Every bottle below is in stock, with current pricing and a direct link.
Three Distilleries, One House
Understanding Suntory means understanding its three distilleries β each producing a deliberately different style of spirit. Yamazaki, opened in 1923, is the founding single malt distillery. Set where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet, it produces a rich, fruit-forward, sherry-influenced malt that defines the Suntory house style.
Hakushu, opened in 1973 in the Japanese Southern Alps, is Suntory's "forest distillery" β built in a remote, high-altitude woodland to produce a fresh, green, lightly smoky single malt with marked herbal character. Chita, opened in 1972 on the coast south of Nagoya, produces a clean, mellow grain whisky that forms the foundation of Suntory's blends. Together, the three distilleries give Hibiki's blenders an extraordinary palette to work with.
The accessible Suntory bottles that built the brand in Japan β designed first and foremost for the highball, the country's national whisky serve.

How to Build a Proper Suntory Highball
- Fill a tall glass to the brim with large, hard ice cubes (the bigger the better β they melt slower).
- Stir the ice with a long bar spoon for ten seconds to chill the glass, then drain any meltwater.
- Pour one part Suntory Toki or Kakubin over the ice β about 30ml.
- Add three to four parts well-chilled soda water, poured gently down the bar spoon to preserve the carbonation.
- Give one slow, vertical stir β just enough to integrate. Garnish with a twist of lemon if you like, or leave it pure.
The single malts that built Japanese whisky's global reputation. Yamazaki for richness and fruit; Hakushu for freshness and forest character. Two distinct philosophies of malt.

Above the bottles above sit the aged single malts and Hibiki expressions that fuel the global secondary market β the 18s, 21s, 25s and 30s. These are produced in deliberately tiny volumes, allocated worldwide, and prized by collectors. Pricing reflects scarcity: a Yamazaki 18 sits around $1,000, a Hibiki 21 above that, and the 30-year-olds in the $6,000+ range. When allocation allows, we list them β see our full Japanese whisky collection for current availability.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Suntory whisky to start with?
For an everyday highball, Suntory Toki ($80) or Kakubin ($65) are the natural entry points. For a first single malt, Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve or Hakushu Distiller's Reserve (both around $140). For the iconic premium blend, Hibiki Harmony at $142.
What's the difference between Yamazaki and Hakushu?
Both are Suntory single malts, but with very different characters. Yamazaki (the Vermilion Valley distillery near Kyoto) is rich, fruit-forward, sherry-influenced, and characterised by Mizunara oak spice. Hakushu (the "forest distillery" in the Southern Alps) is fresh, herbal, lightly smoky, and built for elegance. Yamazaki is the richer one; Hakushu is the lighter one.
What is Hibiki and why is the bottle so distinctive?
Hibiki is Suntory's flagship blended whisky β a marriage of Yamazaki and Hakushu single malts with grain whisky from Chita. The name means "resonance" or "harmony." The iconic 24-faceted bottle represents the 24 seasons of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar β a quietly poetic touch that captures Hibiki's whole philosophy. It's one of the most globally recognisable Japanese whisky packages on Earth.
Suntory vs Nikka β which is better?
It's a matter of taste, not quality β both are exceptional. Broadly: Suntory pursues harmony, refinement, and balance (the more "Japanese" philosophy), while Nikka leans Scottish β bolder, richer, more characterful (founder Masataka Taketsuru trained in Scotland and brought the lessons home to Suntory before founding his own house). Many enthusiasts keep both. Suntory for elegance, Nikka for power.
What is Mizunara oak and why does it matter?
Mizunara is Japanese oak β the rare and highly prized native oak species used by Suntory (and a handful of other Japanese distillers) for cask maturation. It's slow-growing, porous and difficult to coopering, but imparts distinctive flavours: sandalwood, incense, coconut, and the famous "temple wood" spice. Mizunara casks are what give Yamazaki its unmistakable Japanese signature, and explain a significant part of why Suntory commands such global reverence.
Why is Yamazaki so hard to find at good prices?
Yamazaki β particularly the 12, 18 and 25 Year Olds β is allocated globally because demand vastly exceeds production. The distillery opened in 1923 and has only one site producing all Yamazaki single malt; aged stock is finite, and recent global demand has been unprecedented. When we have stock at a fair price, it tends not to last. The 12 Year Old at $239 is currently in stock, but availability fluctuates β if you see it, buy it.
