Mizunara (Quercus mongolica) is a species of Japanese oak that imparts a character found in no other whisky — sandalwood, incense, coconut, and a distinctive oriental spice sometimes described as "agar wood" or "kyara." Mizunara casks are extremely rare, expensive, and technically difficult to work with (they are porous and prone to leaking), but the flavour contribution is unlike anything European or American oak can produce. Hibiki Japanese Harmony includes a subtle Mizunara finish; Hibiki Blossom Harmony is specifically enhanced by Mizunara; Yamazaki expressions include some Mizunara-matured components.
