Global demand for Japanese whisky has grown far faster than the distilleries could keep pace with. Age-stated bottles take exactly as long to mature as their label says, and several houses — Suntory among them — paused some of their own age-stated releases in past years simply because there wasn't enough matured stock to meet demand. What's left of those releases, and what's been bottled since, carries that scarcity into the price.
